1. Terry Says

I’ve been thinking about the various ways you can make money betting. One of the post popular methods is to follow a tipster and that’s what I do for a lot of my betting.

Tipsters get a bad reputation and in far too many cases, the critics are right. There are too many chancers out there who make up results, fudge prices or in some cases make up the name of the horse! Often the big name guys are the worse. In racing circles, Derek “Thommo” Thompson is a legend for all the wrong reasons.

It may be an urban myth but I once heard of an experiment where someone put Thommo’s tips up against selections randomly generated from a tortoise crawling on the racing post. Needless to say, the tortoise performed better over the test period (The modest tortoise turned down subsequent offers of job as a racing pundit!).

But not all tipsters are bad. In fact, you’d be surprised at the number of genuine tipsters out there. In my mind there are two kinds of tipster.

The first are the sort that will shout about all the big winners they’ve had with no mention of the losers. Who cares if you tipped a 16-1 winner if you’re giving out 10 horses a day and your losses far outweigh your gains!

The second sort is the tipster who is prepared to proof their performance warts and all. These are the guys we keep tabs on at www.secretbettingclub.com. These guys have the guts to put their service under scrutiny. I’m a firm believer in following tipsters, the right tipsters that is. You’re paying for someone’s expertise and or time. There are no guarantees, but for the most part, tipsters who are prepared to be transparent, generally perform well for you.

Many people prefer to follow systems and I understand why, there’s something about having the control over what you are betting on. The biggest problem I have with systems is that they are often presented with absolutely no proof of their claimed profits. It goes something like this…

“Try this super new wonder system that’s made me £100,000 this year alone”.

“Hmmm, what proof do you have?” you might ask

“The proof is the results you’ll see when you use the system!” They say “… oh and by the way there’s no money back guarantee”

“Hmmmm!”

Not all systems are bad, the best ones provide a breakdown of past results so you can get an idea of the sort of thing you’re buying. This breakdown should including at least 12 months worth of returns. I’ve lost count of the number of systems I’ve seen shouting about their returns from the last 2 months. 2 months is no time in betting! Lady luck can play such a huge role and betting at random (or hiring a trusty tortoise) could conceivably make good profits in the short term.

Creating your own system or using your own noggin in a specialist field are better, but not everyone has the time or the ability to do this. Even if you have got your own methods you use, following a decent tipster can be a useful addition, particularly if your own methods hit a rough patch. For my own betting I use a mix of my own systems and a portfolio of tipsters. We’ve got some pro gamblers members of www.secretbettingclub.com and even they also supplement their own betting by following some decent tipsters. Over the last 12 months, I’ve made a nice 5 figure sum from just one tipster who I follow at £20 a point. I gladly pay the fellah my subscription fees as I’m obviously getting superb value for money.

Until next Friday…

2. The Next Week In Betting

We weren’t a million miles off with our All Blacks handicap bet last week as England fell to pieces in the second half of the game. This week is a quieter affair with the weekend’s football action the main draw. There are some pretty uninspiring prices around with Arsenal at 1.37, Liverpool at 1.75, Chelsea at 1.61 and Manchester United 1.18 to beat their respective opposition. I’m not one for accumulators, but the acca pays out 3/1 at Boylesports if that floats your boat.

Sunderland are of course without a manager after Roy Keane walked out yesterday. Big Sam Allardyce is currently the bookies fave to be the next manager at 2.75. There are some silly names in the pot though and the 14/1 on Gordon Strachan to leave Celtic looks easy money for the bookies.

Speaking of silly bets, there’s plenty of them around at the moment with Christmas coming up. The classic “Will it snow on Christmas Day?” bet is up and running. The bet is split by location, but the odds of there being a white Christmas in London is currently 5/1.

I hate the program with a passion, but ‘whoever wins X factor’ looks a shoe in for the Christmas number 1 market at 1.20. There’s no half naked Bill Nighy on the cards and the X factor PR machine has once again been working overtime.

You can even bet on what is going to be the top video game for Christmas. The current fave is Call of Duty at 4/6. I say a silly bet, but anyone who works as a buyer in the retail industry could clean up here if you’ve got advanced order figures.

Finally, my silly bet of the week goes to the ‘Who will win the toss bet’ which is available in the cricket markets. What a ridiculous thing to bet on! I’ve often said that bookies would give you 10/11 on a coin flip, but I never believed they would actually offer odds like that for real. The most amazing thing is that it wouldn’t be there if they didn’t get any takers!

The India test series starts again on Thursday and aside from that entirely sensible coin flipping market, there are some interesting odds on offer. England are currently 7/1 best price for the series after the drubbing they received in the one dayers. The correct score market has them at 33/1 to win 2-0 and 8/1 to win 1-0. There’s disquiet in the camp about going back to India after the terrible shootings so I’m wary of getting involved in the outright score market before I see the squad, even though I think there could be some value in England. If pushed, I’d say there’s a bit of value in the draw at 5/2.

3. Tipping Legends Column

The Tipping Legends are 2 horse racing specialists who both have an in-depth knowledge of the sport and will be supplying a full rundown of some of the weekend's feature races and betting angles. These guys know their stuff when it comes to racing.

Today tipping legends explain the different types of jump races.

All Jump races, whether Hurdles or Steeplechase, are divided into Classes and Grades.

Class 1
All 'Pattern' (i.e. major) races carry Class 1 status which represents the highest class of race-type. In order to be entered for Class 1 races your horse needs to be of a high enough handicap rating.

Class 1 races are sub-divided further into Grades:

  • Grade 1 - Championship races where the weight carried by each horses is determined by age and sex with no penalties for previous wins. (Weight-for-Age). They are generally the top races and attract the best horses and biggest prizes.

There are 30 Grade 1 races in the Jumps season.
  • Grade 2 - Either Weight-for-Age races (like Grade 1), but with penalties for previous wins, or Limited Handicaps which feature narrow weight ranges.
  • Grade 3 - Valuable Open Handicaps where the weight carried is determined by a horse's Handicap rating.
  • Listed races - Just below Graded races but are still recognised as high quality competition because of the standard of the horses involved.

Classes 2 - 7
All other races below Class 1 are divided simply into the class of the race, again based on the horse's rating. Class 2 races are worth more prize money than Class 4 races, but your horse needs to be of a higher rating to be allowed to race at this level, and so on.

 4. The Winabobatoo Weekender

Winabobatoo
are English Premier League, Football League and Scottish Premier betting experts. Using their own excellent football system to pretty much 'Win a bob or two' for their members, they are sharing one of their 'star' bets every week with us. Star bets are their best rated, best value bets and worth following in with a few bob of your own.

We’re heading towards Christmas and the mid-point of the football season. It’s been a fascinating 4 months so far.

The Winabobatoo Match Ratings covers all games down to the Conference, and that is where we will go for this weekend’s bet. When I advise bets in the Winabobatoo Betting Magazine, the prices used are the best prices available from just 5 leading bookmakers, and the profit figures I show are based on the same figures. By shopping around it is quite possible to beat these figures and better the profits I declare.

This weekend’s bet is shown in my magazine at 1.91 (10/11). I sent this out to members on Thursday when more books had it at this price, but now there’s just three of four offering that price. Still worth the risk at those odds. Torquay vs Cambridge is a Blue Square Premier match.

Have a bet on Torquay to beat Cambridge at 1.90 available with Stan James, Boyles or Betfred.

Good luck with your betting.

5. Skeeve's Non-League

Skeeve is our resident Non-League betting expert who will be sharing with you his best advice for this weekend's domestic non-league card. What Skeeve doesn't know about all things semi-pro aint worth knowing and the bookies hate it as lets face it they know next-to nothing about football at this level.

Hi everybody,

What do you do when luck doesn't want to have anything with you? When the bad run just won't end? Well, if you're a short-term scammer, it's not a problem, you just disappear and come back in a couple of months under a new name, with a new service and with a new set of promises to your potential customers. If you're thinking long-term, all you can do is stick with your methods, learn from your mistakes and wait for the good days to come back again. Let's hope that the shock results will happen elsewhere this time.

6/12/2008

BLUE SQUARE PREMIER

Lewes – STEVENAGE 2  (1.91 @StanJames) 4 units

You probably know everything about Lewes' problems already, but here's a little update – they barely managed to beat Selsey (four leagues below) in the Sussex Cup last Tuesday and their leading scorer Taylor has just left them for Staines (two leagues below) – not a small problem when you're playing 4-5-1 with the player who just left upfront. They had four consecutive defeats before the 2:0 home win against fellow strugglers Grays, but they had four home defeats before that and if Stevenage take them seriously (which I'm sure they will after their own terrible results lately), there can only be one winner in this match. While Lewes have just lost their best scorer, Stevenage's best scorer Morison will probably return from the ankle injury that ruled him out of last Saturday's match against Wrexham (lost 1:2, but were very unlucky not to get at least a point from that match), but even if he doesn't, Stevenage should win this match comfortably. After four consecutive defeats (if we include the Setanta Shield defeat at Ebbsfleet this Tuesday, which was basically Stevenage's reserve team), it's now or never for Stevenage – and a couple of very good loan signings they managed to make before the transfer deadline can only help us with this bet.

(1.91 also at Blue Square, 1.90 at Expekt btw, 1.85 at Bwin, 1.83 at Ladbrokes...)

6. £25.45 risk free profits with Sporting Bet.

If you are looking to make some extra cash each week you could do a lot worse than take advantage of some of the sign-up bonus offers from highlighted bookies and casinos that can help make you anything from an extra fiver to £1,000.

Before we get onto this week’s offer, at little education…

Some of these offers require you to place a bet to qualify, but that doesn’t mean you needs to waste this qualifying bet. The best way to enter these deals for free is to place the bet with the bookmaker in question then immediately hedge the bet by laying it off for the same amount at
Betfair. The net results should be a tiny loss because of Betfair commission and the difference in odds. These means you can enter some fabulous deals for as little as 50p, instead of the required £5-£20.

If you’re wagering to get a free bet and don’t know how to make the most of your new free bet when you get it, this simplest answer is to now to place the full free bet with the bookmaker, then lay half the amount of the free bet at
Betfair.

Here’s a great bet to get you started:

Sporting Odds/ Sporting Bet are offering a massive £50 free bet for new sign ups and another £50 in free bets after this.
Here’s how to take advantage of the initial free bet.

Sign up to Sporting Odds here.

Deposit your money and back Norwich against Ipswich this weekend at 2.70 for £50.
Lay Norwich on Betfair at 2.82 for £48.74

Your net result will be -£3.70 no matter what happens. BUT you have a £50 free bet due.

Check your account for the free bet and then do the following using the free bet on the back side.

Back Norwich against Ipswich at 2.70 for £50.
Lay Norwich on Betfair at 2.82 for £30.69

Your net result will be +£29.15 no matter what happens.

That’s a £25.45 total profit without risking a penny!

Remember to double check the terms and conditions and be aware that odds might change.
