1. Terry Says

Welcome back to my latest Weekend Wager column, my regular take on the upcoming betting calendar with a few handy guest articles and bets thrown in for good measure. A good weekend for those who enjoy the free betting advice in the column, with both the Winabobatoo and Skeeve bets winning as outlined. Kudos too is due to Tipping Legends for correctly picking out a key price range trend for winners of the Paddy Power Gold cup on Saturday.

One thing that has been on my mind this week is the notion that to be a successful gambler, this means you need to have place huge bets to make huge returns. I am sure some people think that successful gamblers all place a £1500 each way bet here and a £5000 bet on a football game there. If that is your opinion of what it takes to be a successful gambler I really want to challenge that and perhaps even open a discussion on this as I think it needs doing.

My own experience as a pro punter finds that more and more I am often placing lots of bets at relatively smallish stakes as opposed to those big one-off punts. Take a regular Friday night/Saturday morning I reckon I place around 50 + bets during that period on all kinds of sports and staking wise my stakes usually vary from between £20 up to £200. I also normally have a couple of lumpy bets on the non-league scene, with the max usually being £400 if I am very confident.  Footie is the most popular obviously before a Saturday but also on other sports such as Racing, Darts, Cricket and whatever else is being recommended. This for me is the basis of my betting success and I reckon this can be done by anyone with the right guidance like we provide at the Secret Betting Club. (Shameless plug I know but hey it works and I believe in it!).

I don’t know about you but I much prefer spreading around my bets like that across the whole scene than having a weighty £4000 on the nose for 1 horse to win its race. Much better for your health (and no doubt your wealth too!).

Until next Friday…

Terry Allen

2. The Next Week In Betting

More rugby internationals again this weekend and it doesn’t get any easier for England who take on world champions South Africa as they look to take revenge for the defeat in the World Cup Final last year in Paris. Martin Johnson’s boys were comprehensively outplayed last Saturday and gave away a large number of penalties which ultimately led to their downfall. South Africa have had a long hard slog this season and were lucky to beat Scotland last Saturday, I doubt we are in for a classic game but fancy a home win and will be taking the 2.05 on offer from Canbet. Elsewhere Wales host the mighty All Blacks, Ireland take on Argentina and Scotland host Canada.

Plenty of interesting looking clashes in the Premier League this weekend and it will be a real test of Aston Villa and their push for a top 4 space as they host Manchester Utd. Last week they played Arsenal off the park at the Emirates (not often that happens) but I feel they are more suited to the playing away on the break with the pace in their team and Man Utd will be a touch too good for them. I’m taking the 1.83 with Skybet on Utd to take this one as it looks value. At 14/1, Fulham also look too big away at Anfield, and though I don’t expect them to win, the +1.5 handicap at 1.98 with Bet365, now that appeals to me. Fulham will go for the draw no doubt about it and have only conceded only 11 goals from 12 games this season, 6 of these away from home.

Cricket as you know is a passion of mine and I have had a few bets recently on the England – India and Australia – New Zealand series that are ongoing currently. In-particular I took a punt on Mitchell Johnson for the Aussies to be the top wicket taker in the 2 test series at 3/1. The leader in the market, Brett Lee had been bang out of form lately and sadly seems to have a host of non-cricket issues on his mind although Stuart Clark also at 3/1 is a major threat. Now onto the 3 lions, and I am no fan of Peter Moores, the England coach as his team selection has baffled me. Despite the inclusion at last of a specialist spinner in Graeme Swann it seems too little too late and the damage has been done. India if they keep their foot on the gas look good for a 7-0 whitewash in their current form, although the odds on that don’t quite appeal at best priced 9/4. England’s problems are quite simple, they are not making enough runs and at the same time letting India score too many!

My bets on Swann at 14/1 and Patel at 4/1 to be top bowler in the series seem to be still on as not one bowler has pulled clear yet. Owais Shah at the advised 9/1 is now down to 5/1 to be top batsmen and that looks decent. Call me a madman but I am having a tiny saver on the 33/1 from Skybet on Colly to also take top-spot, the guy is a class act despite his form with the bat in the first 3 games so far and it would be pure Colly to get a 100 next game.

Elsewhere and there will be a fair amount of interest on the betting of the Ricky Hatton – Paul Malignaggi fight on Sat night and the Hitman is a fairly confident favourite at 1.44 best price with Boylesports. Elsewhere there is also going to be a rash of betting interest on a range of reality TV shows, the X Factor, I’m A Celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing but I must profess to knowing only a little about them. To me it doesn’t seem a level betting field with people dropping in and out at will (This Seargent fella and Diana on X Factor). Still if it interests you and you can make a buck on it, good luck to you, I always believe it doesn’t matter what you bet on if it makes you money! Football, Golf, Tiddlywinks!

3. Tipping Legends Column

The Tipping Legends are 2 horse racing specialists who both have an in-depth knowledge of the sport and will be supplying a full rundown of some of the weekend's feature races and betting angles. These guys know their stuff when it comes to racing, ignore at your peril.

Today in both the column and the question and answer section we are going to tackle the issues of jockeys fees & allowances. Firstly the fees that jockeys can expect to earn…

Jockeys actually earn agreed percentages of all price money won, but in addition to this they are also paid riding fees (which cover all the jockey’s expenses which includes travelling to the races) as follows:-

Flat jockeys  £100.44 plus Vat
Jump Jockeys  £ 137.10 plus Vat

So a jump jockey travelling from for example Somerset to Haydock for just one unplaced ride, would be out of pocket. At the other end of the scale, a flat race jockey with for example 6 rides at Sandown in the afternoon, followed by 6 rides on the AW at Kempton Park in the evening, would gross over £1200 on the day. That is before any share they may earn from prize money over the day.

It is apparent therefore that there is a huge difference between the earnings of a journeyman jockey compared with a top jockey who is paid a retainer by a large succesful stable. It is therefore certainly well worth being aware of jockey fees and how they work when weighing up your bets!

4. Ask The Legends Your Question

Do you have a burning question about horse racing or just betting in general you want to put to the experts? Well here is your chance as the Tipping Legends addresses your questions each week. To put your own question to them send it in an email to info@secretbettingclub.com

This weeks question is…

What can you tell me about Jockey’s allowances?

Jockeys allowances work as follows.

Apprentice - flat - must be contracted to licensed trainer. They receive 7lbs until they ride 20 winners and 5lbs between 20-50 winners.

Conditional - jump - 7lbs until 20 winners, 5lbs between 20-40 winners, 3lbs between 40-75 winners and 1lb between 75-95 winners.

Amateur riders - 7 lbs under 5 winners, 5 lbs between 5-10 winners and 3lbs between 10-20 winners.

There is no doubt whatsoever that good apprentice, conditional & amateur riders receiving allowances can make a significant difference to a horse’s chance. We always use a guide of 1 pound allowance to be worth a length on the flat, and at least 2 lengths over jumps, particularly when the conditional presents horses well at the fences.

5. The Winabobatoo Weekender
Winabobatoo are English Premier League, Football League and Scottish Premier betting experts. Using their own excellent football system to pretty much 'Win a bob or two' for their members, they are sharing one of their 'star' bets every week with us. Star bets are their best rated, best value bets and worth following in with a few bob of your own.

So far, so good....I’ve given you two winners from 3 bets and you’re showing a 30% profit on turnover to level stakes bets.

I mention level stakes bets, but there is so much confusion about staking and staking plans. The simple rule is that if it doesn’t make a profit from putting £1 on each bet, you will lose money in the long run.

No juggling around with increasing stakes after a loser or similar, will turn a long-term loser into a profitable bettor. My “Money Management” guide explains everything you need to know about staking, and you can get a free copy by visiting my website. www.winabobatoo.co.uk

I’ve recommended 20 winners out of 30 bets to my members this month, and a £20 bet on each has made them £184. There are a number of Value bets around this weekend. Cardiff won for us last weekend and they are over-priced again this week to win at Plymouth. So, I think we will stick with them again.

My Winabobatoo formulae tell me that 28% of all matches are won by the away team, Cardiff have a 40% chance of winning at Plymouth. The bookies should have priced this game at 6/4 for the away win, but are taking bets at 2/1.

Have a bet on Cardiff to beat Plymouth at 2/1 (3.00) available with BetFred, SkyBet, or Corals.

6. Skeeve's Non-League

Skeeve is our resident Non-League betting expert who will be sharing with you his best advice for this weekend's domestic non-league card. What Skeeve doesn't know about all things semi-pro aint worth knowing and the bookies hate it as lets face it they know next-to nothing about football at this level.

Hi everybody,

Another succesful free pick last weekend – Tamworth's win away at Farsley brought +3.89 units profit to everyone who staked 3 units on an away win and 1 unit on a draw. This is the FA Trophy weekend, but it's still too early for me to get involved (you should always learn from your mistakes), so I've decided to focus on Blue Square Premier and I was more than satisfied with value in the odds currently available. This is one of these picks:

22/11/2008

BLUE SQUARE PREMIER

BARROW – Weymouth 1  (2.20 @Stan James) 5 units

Barrow are one of my favourite non-league teams and it's really not hard to guess why – they brought me +24 units profit when they won promotion last season (the odds on them to promote were 13.00 when my susbcribers and me took the bet). I'm still angry at myself for not taking the bet on them at home against Oxford on the opening day of this season – the odds were around 3.00 and although I chickened out, they didn't – they won 3:0. They were awesome against Eastbourne this Tuesday (+3.5 units there) in the FA Cup replay (won 4:0), but it wasn't just Eastbourne's off day, Barrow are indeed very strong at home and I see major value in the odds on them to win at home once again. Barrow's last three home matches were all comfortable wins (3:1 vs Eastbourne, 3:1 vs Forest Green, 4:0 vs Eastbourne in the FA Cup), they shared points with Burton in a goalless draw before that run, they scored 14 goals in the last 6 matches, their high-flying striker Brodie will be returning to York, but only after this match, Thompson and Kerr were cup-tied for the Eastbourne match but now return, and their opponents are nothing to be afraid of. Weymouth are in a lot of problems, there's a constant threat of administration there, they're not playing well lately (three defeats – 1:2 to a Ryman outfit Hornchuch in the FA Cup, 0:1 at Rushden, 1:3 to Wrexham – a 1:1 draw with struggling, ten-men Woking last Saturday and a shock 1:0 win at Kettering who had won the 'manager of the month' award before the match so it's not really a shock, in the last five matches), Barrow is a long journey and they'll be without two suspended players, forward McPhee and defender Gaia (both standard players of course) – and they also have some injury doubts (Ironside is definitely out, Coutts has a hamstring injury...). Yep, they've signed teenage defender Collins on loan from their league rivals Cambridge (played only one match for Cambridge this season), but somehow that doesn't scare me.

(btw you can find odds up to 2.40 at some less known bookmakers I haven't used yet and it's 2.30 currently at Betfair, 2.20 also at Bet365, Paddy Power, Skybet, Sportingbet, Victor Chandler...)

7. Easy tenner with this week’s RISK FREE Bookmaker Offer

If you are looking to make some extra cash each week you could do a lot worse than take advantage of some of the sign-up bonus offers from highlighted bookies and casinos that can help make you anything from an extra fiver to £1,000.

Before we get onto this week’s offer, at little education…

Some of these offers require you to place a bet to qualify, but that doesn’t mean you needs to waste this qualifying bet. The best way to enter these deals for free is to place the bet with the bookmaker in question then immediately hedge the bet by laying it off for the same amount at
Betfair. The net results should be a tiny loss because of Betfair commission and the difference in odds. These means you can enter some fabulous deals for as little as 50p, instead of the required £5-£20.

If you’re wagering to get a free bet and don’t know how to make the most of your new free bet when you get it, this simplest answer is to now to place the full free bet with the bookmaker, then lay half the amount of the free bet at
Betfair. You’ll need to do some tweaking depending on the odds, but that’s not a bad starter for 10.

Here’s a great bet to get you started:

CentreBet are often overlooked, but they are a great bookmaker to have an account with as their prices are often better than the UK bookies on some sports. They’re a professional outfit listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

If you are a new customer, CentreBet
will give you a £20 free bet if you bet £20. Here’s how to take advantage of it.

Sign up to CentreBet here AND use the promotional code AFFGBP

Back Stoke against West Brom this weekend at 2.30 for £20.
Lay Stoke on Betfair at 2.32 for £20.26

Your net result will be -£0.75 no matter what happens. BUT you have a £20 free bet due.

Check your account for the free bet and then do the following using the free bet on the back side.

Back Stoke against West Brom at 2.30 for £20.
Lay Stoke on Betfair at 2.32 for £11.45

Your net result will be +£10.88  no matter what happens.

£10 total profit without risking a penny!

Remember to double check the terms and conditions and be aware that odds might change.
